Your Next NDP Candidate in the Souris-Moose Mountain Constituency Is…

A couple months ago, I wrote about how I attended the local NDP association's AGM with Shea's uncle who's big with the NDP (he ran in the 2000 Federal election) during a visit to Weyburn.  During the meeting, one old-timer had leaned over and asked if I might be interested in running.  I told him I didn't live in Weyburn and that was that.  Or so I thought…

Well, last night, after the our library region's AGM, I bumped into the NDP association president at a restaurant.  I told him I was living in Weyburn now and he said, “We think the election's coming sooner rather than later and still need a candidate.  You interested?”

Shea and I had talked about this jokingly after that first meeting but both agreed it would be an incredible opportunity.  The NDP has never won in this riding in six tries so it's a good chance learn about politics, get directly involved but without a lot of pressure (although I'm still going to try to win of course!)

I've just accepted a new job as I mentioned in my last post but he said that I could work around this – campaigning in the evenings and on weekends.  A lot of the work is done by volunteers, and via things that don't need your direct attention like radio ads and direct mail pieces.

I've already come up with the slogan I'm going to use.

  1. Very good. And funny. Reinforces the importance of following links in blogs (which I don't always do).
Of course, the joke might have been on you if you had been serious! New job, new baby, campaign trail … yeah.
How long were you thinking about this as a hoax? Did you plan it with your original story a few posts back, or did it just come to you?

  2. You could convince anyone of almost anything, don't drink the kool-aid blog readers….. 😉

  3. It just came to me this morning – I was trying to think of something to do on the blog (April Fool's jokes are pretty popular online – every year, Google does one. This year, it was that they were going to supply free high speed to everyone but as you read through the fake site, they were going to do this using sewer lines instead of telephone or cable lines. Search for “Google TiSP” to see the site.)
Anyhow, I know the best jokes have a touch of reality and another touch of believability to them so I thought it might be fun to reference back to something I'd mentioned earlier in the blog.
The story of the old timer leaning over to ask me if I lived in Weyburn was completely true but it was perfect for this prank because we *did* end up moving to Weyburn after all!
Shea and her folks got me when I got up saying we had a flat tire over night (again, a grain of truth – my dad found a (short) nail in our tire the other day so I thought it could be true)
But I got my mother-in-law back because she reads my blog (even when I'm here – why not just talk to me? ) so I showed her today's post and said “I didn't want to say anything until I talked to Shea. But we're going to do it. What do you think?”
Of course, she bought it hook, line and sucker. Ah, April Fool's, the dumbest “holiday” in existence.

  4. You really had me going! Good thing I am interested in slogans or I might not have figured it out! And I believed it because you seem like you are so involved in stuff, like at FIMS… I was only thinking 'your poor wife' with the new baby and you being so busy… good one!

  5. ooh, I fell for this one, but like others I love SLOGANS so did click on the link. I too was thinking Oh man, the beginning of the end. New daddy as politician. Ouch! But at the same time, I was about to fish my latest plea from the NDP for $$$ out of the recycling bin…Guilt!!!
