A pretty fun Ask MetaFilter question asks what are the most strange yet enjoyable food and flavour combinations you know?
Here's a few samples…
– ham and peanut butter
– cheese and brown sugar
– lemonade with salt and pepper (popular in India apparently)
– lemonade with iced tea
– half grapefruit, sprinkled with cinnamon and briefly microwaved
– garlic and orange juice
The one main lesson? Apparently peanut butter goes with anything!
I don't know if I have any personal ones – Shea's a big fan of french fries and ice cream (and that reminds me of a friend who would layer his french fries on his hamburger rather than eating them on the side). I always eat my pork chops with Vietnamese hot sauce rather than apple sauce. Someone in the thread posts that they get weird reactions eating grilled cheese with ketchup but I definitely do that. Going back to the peanut butter theme, my father-in-law eats peanut butter & onion sandwiches. My own dad talks of eating ketchup sandwiches growing up (I'm never sure if that's a “we were so poor” thing or if it's a “I was a really strange kid” thing! 😀)

Well now I'm hungry! I always get weird looks outside of Quebec when I ask for mayo with my fries. Chris had a thing for PB and pickle sandwiches! 😛 When I was in my home town in Northern Quebec a couple of years ago my cousin and I went to a local diner and they served our fries in the hotdogs (on top of the sausages) – never seen that before.
My first mayo with fries was in Amsterdam – someone I was traveling with clued me in: “You have to try this!” – but now the only place I think to ask for mayo is New York Fries because I know they have it there since they're “fry experts” or whatever. I'll have to try it some other places to see what sort of reaction I get.
PB & pickle? I guess the other part of question is “how do people stumble upon these combos in the first place?” :-0
My sister used to love ham and strawberry jam sandwiches. My mother refused to make them for her, she was so grossed out. In turn, I refused to eat the cheese and pickle sandwiches that my mom made.
And my dad still speaks longingly of the mouth-watering LARD sandwiches he used to eat as a kid. (I think that was a “we were so poor in a Communist country” thing, though).
Sure, if we can eat pork and apples, ham and strawberries is a logical next step! Then bacon and uhm, any fruit since it's BACON god's most perfect food!
