Litany of Lies: A Third Grader’s Reading Log Exposed!

I often feel guilty that Shea and I don’t do a better job of keeping up Pace’s reading log but after doing a few “I’m a librarian.  I can confirm he’s reading all the time.  We’re good.”-type entries at the start of the year, we’ve slipped off completely.

At least that means we won’t get any notes like this back anyhow! 😉

Music Monday – “Wishin’ I had money/Wishin’ for the time to spend it all/Wishin’ I was pretty/Wish that I could twist the world ’round my finger”

Stumbled across this folk/Americana version of “Wish I Was Skinny” by 1990’s Britpop band, Boo Radleys, which makes one of my favourite songs possibly even better! 😉

Flames Lose To Ducks And Are Out of #StanleyCup Playoffs To End Cinderella Season

As the NHL season came to a close, I kept telling myself that if they could just make the playoffs, that was more than anyone expected of the Flames this season.  And they did that.

Then I just wanted to beat their arch-rival Canucks in the first round.  And they did that.

Then I just wanted them to have a strong performance against the Ducks in Round Two, break a 20+ game losing streak in the Honda Centre in Anaheim and then maybe anything could happen.  But after three chances to do so, the Flames couldn’t break the streak and tonight, ended up losing 4 games to 1 in the series and the Cinderella season of all-time came to a deflating end.

Why deflating?  Well, the winning Ducks goal in OT was scored by a guy with a reputation for diving and embellishment.  (As one person on Twitter observed, Corey Perry appeared to have made a 6-9 month recovery in one shift after taking a knee-on-knee hit.)

Perry’s comeback to score the winner and a few bad calls by the refs against the Flames and not the Ducks (personal pet peeve – how the NHL changes the level of enforcement of rules, not just from game-to-game by period-to-period.  Things that are penalties in the first are rarely in the third and so on) put a damper on the night but ultimately, the Flames lost to the better team.

Beyond that, this has been an amazing season – perhaps the best season of hockey I’ve watched since I was a kid.

The Flames have drawn a lot of comparisons to the Chicago Blackhawks that won the Stanley Cup in 2010 and 2013 with players like Johnny Gaudreau (Patrick Kane), Sean Monahan (Jonathan Toews) and Jiri Hudler (Patrick Sharp), Mark Giordano (Brent Seabrook) as well as using a combination of goalies rather than a clear #1 and #2.  Of course the Flames also have Brandon Bollig who was also effective for the Hawks when he played for them – all of which adds up to a lot of echoes of what makes a successful team that can go all the way. 😉

And with nominations for Lady Byng (Jiri Hudler), Calder (Johnny Gaudreau) and Jack Adams (Bob Hartley) plus someone who likely would’ve been nominated for the Norris if he didn’t get injured late in the season (Mark Giordano) plus a huge cupboard full of draft picks, tons of prospects who stepped up all year, the future looks very bright in Cowtown indeed!

I can’t wait for October…

Have You Pressed “The Button”?

Reddit's "The Button"

What started as an unusual April Fool’s joke – a single button appeared a special sub-Reddit – has turned into a genuine social media phenomenon which may have implications for online collaboration in the development of public policy, software and numerous other areas.

The button had a 60-second countdown counter which users could only push once and which resets after being pushed.  As of today, over a month after April 1, nearly a million people have participated and the button’s counter has not yet reached zero.

What Redditors quickly realised is that where you pushed the button gave you a certain “flair” by your user name on The Button sub-Reddit.  If you’ve never pushed, you’re grey.  Then, in ten second increments, you receive an ascending colour of the rainbow – starting at purple (59-50 second) to red (10-1 second.)

As with many online sites that use gaming tropes, there is a certain amount of prestige being given to those with lower “scores” for pushing the button.

Needless to say, I pushed as soon as I went to the site and got purple! 😉

Music Monday – “When the night has come/And the land is dark/And the moon is the only light we’ll see” (RIP Ben E. King)

Is there a better coming-of-age movie than “Stand By Me”?  And the title song of that movie is part of the reason it had such an impact on me.

I remember seeing “Stand By Me” in the theatre in Indian Head when I was about 13 years old then walking out into the street and not being able to get the song, which I don’t think I’d ever heard before, out of my head.

Here’s a tribute version performed by Tracy Chapman on the David Letterman show after the recent passing of Ben E. King.
