Today sort of disappeared on me so I don't have time to do the “Thoughts on the RPL Staff Conference” post I promised yesterday. Instead, some discussion at MetaFilter about Geocities which officially goes offline tomorrow.

…and XKCD.com redesigned his site for a day to commemorate the occasion.
That's kind of sad, in a weird way. Though every time I've run into a Geocities page in the last several years (a rare occasion, but it happens), I've thought to myself, “…they're still around?!”
So, not really surprised, except that it took this long.
(The xkcd redesign rocks, though.)
My old Angelfire webpage is still there and I updated it a little bit this April.
Very cool – reminds me of my first forays onto the Internet back in the mid-1990's.
Supposedly a couple places – the Internet Archive Project and maybe one other – have archived the site so it'll still live on as a snapshot of a very specific point in the Internet's development.
I had one or two GeoCities pages over the years – I wish I'd looked them up before the site went down. But I don't know if I'd still have the URL since it was so long ago that I created them. Maybe they got archived and I can dig them up that way sometime.
