Friday Fun Link – DIY Library (Sept 5, 2008) …and a question for the MacVangelists out there.

“A new library in Casanera, Colombia shows us what humankind might have
built with sticks and stones if they'd never discovered bricks, steel,
and electricity
. The Villanueva Public Library was built on a modest
budget, designed by a bunch of university students in Bogota. And
instead of importing fancy, expensive materials, builders used local
timber and stones from nearby rivers to lower transportation costs.
Then, instead of hiring experienced construction workers, they trained
local people to build it.”

On another topic, a question for all of you MacVangelists out there.  If you were to buy a new MacBook, which one would you go for?  Is the MacBook Pro worth what seems to be a substantial extra cost?  Do any of you run Parallels or other software to run Windows for PC-only apps?  Any other thoughts somebody looking to possibly convert should consider?  I'm just kicking tires here but with a new laptop in my near horizon, I want to check out all the options.

  1. I am new to the Mac game, and so I bought the cheapest MacBook, which will suit my needs just fine, also, I managed a student discount, so they threw in a printer..
The 'mac geniuses' can convert all your files etc. and I bought the Office for Macs and have nothing but praise for it, I can open Office docs that were created on my PC, etc…I'm no expert by any means, but it's been a smooth transition for me.

  2. The student deal where I bought is a free iPod – too bad my student card is just *a bit* out of date. I'm trying to do all the file transfer myself and so far, no major problems. Getting my e-mail imported was a HUGE task and a nerve-wracking one – but luckily it worked after a couple shots at it.

  3. I have to admit – I ignored both of your (good) pieces of advice. I went with the MacBook pro mostly for the larger screen and hard drive and I decided to buy right away because frankly, being without a laptop for nearly a month was giving me the DT's! (I justified the extra cost of the MacBook as making this purchase not much more than the total cost of the PC laptop I bought 3 years ago – though the cost of PC's has dropped so much, I'm debating buying a bottom-end one in a few months just to have it!)
