2009 NHL Playoff Predictions

[Edit: I'm getting a lot of hits from people searching Google for NHL playoff predictions.  I don't have time to flesh out my thoughts unfortunately to make this post a bit more informative.  But here's an interesting site I came across to help track your playoff predictions.  You can also make a donation to help the Mario Lemieux Foundation when you join the site – though that's not required.]

I was
50% last year for the first round of the NHL playoffs.

Let's try it again this year:

Montreal over Boston
Washington over New York Rangers
Carolina over New Jersey
Pittsburgh over Philadelphia

San Jose over Anaheim
Detroit over Columbus
Vancouver over St. Louis
Calgary over Chicago

  5. Hey im Josh and these are my picks
    East:
-Boston vs Montreal – Bruins in 5 (Montreal is not good enough)
-Washington vs NY Rangers – Rangers in 7 (You need a goalie in the playoffs, NY has it, Caps dont)
-New Jersey vs Carolina – Jersey in 6 (Martin Brodeur)
-Pittsburg vs Philadelphia – Flyers in 6 (Pittsburgs Hot, hot teams normally cool off in a playoff series) “Oh and im a little bit biased in this season, GO Flyers GO”
    West:
-San Jose vs Anaheim – Sharks in 7 (Sharks are built for the season not playoffs and the ducks are the opposite, but the sharks are still too powerfull in the end)
-Detroit vs Columbus – Wings in 6 (Same team from cup win from last year + Hossa, watch out)
-Vancouver vs St. Louis – Vancouver in 7 (I would love for the blues to win this but ultimatly Luongo is a better goalie than Mason)
-Chicago vs Calgary – Flames in 6 ( Yeah they blew it down the strech but Ill take a veteran in Iginla over a young gun like Toews, nothing against Toews… I hope they prove me wrong)

Boston vs. Pittsburgh: Boston in 7
San Jose vs. Vancouver: Vancouver in 6
Boston vs. Vancouver: Boston in 6

  10. I agree with all of your picks and explanations… but I do disagree with one, I think Pittsburgh will beat Philly (probably in 6 or 7)…. since the additions of Guerin and Kunitz Pittsburgh has been hot, and now has a good roster to be playoff contenders… also Malkin and Crosby, the two best players in the NHL? It's like Pittsburgh when they had Lemieux and Jagr, these two players are unreal so we'll see if Philly can use their size and aggression to bump these guys off the puck.

  11. A little bit idiotic, Montreal started off great this season don't get me wrong, but now they are an absolutely terrible hockey team. Now that they lost Markov (who is their whole team, had the most points) they have to rely on geezer Kovalev, cancer man Koivu and Alex Tanguay (who is my favorite hockey player i'll admit). But if you put these guys up again Savard, Lucic and Wheeler…. you can kiss that round goodbye. How can they possibly get passed Chara let alone get a good enough shot off to get past Thomas? It's physically impossible, and now with the addition of Mark Recchi the Boston Bruins are unstoppable and going to win the Stanley Cup against the Vancouver Canucks. BOSTON FTW!

  12. First of all since your a Flyers fan, let me take a stab at them first. Like you said about Washington (no goalie), the Flyers are the same. They are double goalied and the Biron is good, but he's a little weak at the moment. Nittymaki is good too, but a coach can't rely on a back-up. Gagne and others stand their ground on offense, but I don't think can win a championship. Defense can. And the Flyers don't have the strongest D. I hate Boston and I'm a Canadiens fan and to be honest, I think Boston will win because they have the D and a goalie. Price is good at the moment but he's inconsitent. That's all for now.
Most of your other picks I don't have problems with.

  13. Wow! so characteristic of a Boston fan to use a term like “cancer man Koivu”. Boston fans are pathetic, they're just shitting bricks because its the first time in ten years its been socially acceptable to be called a Boston fan. Regardless, the habs are gonna destroy them in the first round, just like they did last playoffs, and just like theyve always done in the post-season. BOSTON WTF!
ps. komi's gonna wreck lucic very soon, i can see it coming

  14. Carolina over New Jersey – 6 games
Pittsburgh over Philadelphia – 6 games
Montreal over Boston – 7 games
Washington over New York – 6 games
San Jose over Anaheim – 6 games
Detroit over Columbus – 4 games
Vancouver over St. Louis – 6 games
Chicago over Calgary – 6 games
Carolina over Montreal – 5 games
Pittsburgh over Washington – 7 games
Chicago over San Jose – 7 games
Detroit over Vancouver – 6 games
Pittsburgh over Carolina – 6 games
Chicago over Detroit – 7 games
Chicago Over Pittsburgh – 6 games
    Chicago Wins the Stanley Cup

  15. Hey im Josh and these are my picks
    East:
-Boston vs Montreal – Bruins in 5 (Montreal is not good enough)
-Washington vs NY Rangers – Rangers in 7 (You need a goalie in the playoffs, NY has it, Caps dont)

-Chicago vs Calgary – Flames in 6 ( Yeah they blew it down the strech but Ill take a veteran in Iginla over a young gun like Toews, nothing against Toews… I hope they prove me wrong)
    My earlier Picks.
So far im good in the east except for the pens flyers, but no team has been the best team overall yet, the flyers need to win in pitt, that rangers loss came back to bite them and everyone thought for the flyers to win they had to take out malkin, but its been crosby whos been pretty quite. (Still made about the stall penalty in game 2, but a veteran play by a reletivly young guy)
The west im not as good in the east, i figured the sharks would choke abit but i never though it would be this bad, and how many people thought gigure would be the starter sometime in this series and i gave the jackets and blues to much credit, and i have to apologize to toews, he was a beast in game two.
    New Picks
    Bruins in 5
    Rangers in 5
    NJ in 6
    Flyers in 7
    Ducks in 6
    Wings in 4
    Canucks in 4
    Hawks in 6

  16. howd that work out for ya? now u can go back to ur worthless canadian life until next years season cuz theres nothing else in montreal

  17. Congratulations for correctly predicting seven of eight first round playoff series correctly. Few NHL analysts are this accurate.
