Some Sasha Stuff

20130919-222459.jpg

Sasha turned five months old a couple days ago so I thought it might be fun to note a few of the things going on in her life these days…

– she’s an unbelievable sleeper. Like, she goes down at 8pm and sleeps right through to 8am without waking up almost every single night! (Although we’re a bit worried as she’s just started to get restless when we put her down for the night, maybe realising what’s coming and not liking it?)

– she’s also unbelievably happy – there’s so much I love about her but going into her room when she first wakes up in the morning and seeing the giant smile and how she literally bounces on the bed, kicking her legs when she sees Shea or I is amazing.

– my standard line when you consider these last two points is: “If we knew the second one was going to be so good, we wouldn’t have waited six years to have another one!”  (Of course, that’s not entirely true – there are all kinds of factors on why we waited so long from just not feeling ready to Pace doing extended breastfeeding so feeling like “our baby” well into his second year to a long time trying to conceive when we did decide to have another child to an unfortunate miscarriage after we finally did get pregnant.)

– she does lots of babbling and I’m sure that I heard her say “Geek!” the other day so I’m going to call that her first word, even if Shea disagrees! 😉

– being able to get home for lunches in my new job as Regent Place Branch Head is perfect too – a nice echo of what happened when Pace was the same age and I was working for Southeast Regional Library in Weyburn and also able to get home at lunch to see him.

– Of course, that means I occasionally have to do a quick change of my shirt if I get spit up on (or worse! That happened once with Pace and I didn’t even notice Pace left a souvenir on me when I changed him at noon until I got home at the end of the day!  Hopefully none of my co-workers noticed the small brown stain on the side of my shirt either!) 😉

– like all babies of this age, she loves putting stuff in her mouth, grabbing onto things, and cooing endlessly.

– last night, we had a “disco party” in Pace’s room. He has some Lego that blinks different colours so he shut the door, told me to put on “Party Rock Anthem” and dance. I didn’t know if Sasha would like it but she was smiling non-stop!

– still not rolling over but getting closer every day.

– unlike her big brother, she’s a thumb sucker (or occasionally a toe sucker!)

– tonight’s made up daddy song went “I don’t drink milk from an udder/Or from my big brother/I get all my milk from/My mudder!”

– I think we started Pace on real food somewhere around his fifth month but we’ll likely wait another month for Sasha to start eating as she’s not showing the same interest in what’s going in our mouths that Pace was at this point.

Flames vs. Islanders Exhibition Game in #yqr – Why I Didn’t Go…

So my two favourite NHL teams are playing an exhibition game tonight in Regina  and I made the tough decision not to go…

There are a couple reasons…

– the biggest reason is the price.  Even though it’s an exhibition game, tickets range from $98 for the *lowest* priced to $148.50 for the highest (of those that are still available on TicketMaster anyhow – I think some seats may have even had higher prices, based on the asking prices on Kijiji.ca and other reseller sites.  Plus, the fact that I can even get pretty decent tickets at this late point tells me I’m not the only one put off by the high price.)  There was a late deal where you could get five tickets for $350 bringing the “per ticket” cost down to $75 which is getting closer to my own personal price point for a meaningless NHL exhibition game (maybe ~$50) but then you have to find four other suckers people willing to cough up that much as well.

– also, as an exhibition game, you know you won’t be getting the best hockey, both in terms of competition with nothing on the line, and also in terms of rosters.  (Regina’s already been burned when a previous exhibition game featured no star players.)  In fact, Calgary and the Islanders are playing a double-header tonight with half of each roster in Regina and half in Calgary.  We *did* get John Tavares, last year’s Hart Trophy finalist who would’ve been cool to see live but doesn’t compare to when the Oilers had exhibition games against the Blues back in the 1980’s and I got to see Wayne Gretzky and crew thanks to my dad!

– Pace had a “Welcome Back BBQ!” at his school from 5 – 7 pm so I didn’t want to commit to something else in case I got caught up there visiting or whatever.

– a related note: this seems like an ideal thing to take your son to (as my dad did for me in the 80’s like I mentioned) but Pace has close to zero interest in hockey so far (and I’m not pushing him – as much as I want to!)  So attending an exhibition game would probably be a few minutes of interest followed by me trying to corral a squirming kid or trying to watch the game while keeping him distracted with my iPhone.

– if I’m going to blow big bucks on an NHL game, it might as well be part of a road trip to Winnipeg or Calgary (where I even know some people with season tickets I might be able to hit up for freebies!).  Of course saying that, when we were in Winnipeg last January, guess who was in town and I still didn’t get down to the game (although to be fair, Jets games are sold out for the next five years meaning you have to go through scalpers or you’re not getting in.  And if I blanched at $90 for a nosebleed seat for a Flames exhibition game, $250+ for nosebleeds at a regular game seemed even worse!)

Anyhow, can’t wait for the regulation season to start when I can enjoy the majority of games from the comfort of my living room in crystal clear HDTV! 😉

EagleCam!

Someone mounted a POV camera on an eagle and the result is probably as close as I’ll ever get to what it actually feels like to fly (unless they hurry up and invent a workable, affordable jetpack!)

Music Monday – “You could have your choice of men/But I could never love again/I’m begging you/Please don’t take my man”

It’s very possible that slowing down “Jolene”, the classic country song by Dolly Parton, makes it an even better song (not to mention how her suddenly masculine voice brings in all kinds of gender play beyond what was in the original version.)

Oh My God! Holy Shit!! Jesus Christ!!! (aka My Reaction To Tonight’s Episode of “Breaking Bad”)

Someone on Reddit posted their girlfriend’s reaction at various points during tonight’s episode of “Breaking Bad” and I’d concur…

Fans are already calling it “the greatest episode of television in history” and I’d say if not, it’s pretty damn close!

Like the majority of the show’s millions of fans, Shea and I came late to the “Breaking Bad” phenomenon, binge-watching episodes we downloaded from BitTorrent sites beginning to Season 2 and, like the meth that’s the central to the show’s premise, the show was also beyond addictive.  We’d watch a couple episodes in a row each evening then I’d beg Shea to watch just one more but she’d always be a responsible adult and tell me that we needed to get some sleep! 😉

I haven’t watched every contender for “Best Show Ever” (Mad Men, Game of Thrones, Sopranos, The Wire, etc.) but I can’t imagine how any of them could combine all the elements that make “Breaking Bad” what it is (and has made it the third highest rated TV program of all-time on IMDB, only being beaten by a couple highly regarded nature documentary series.)

Breaking Bad = highly original premise.  Brilliant writing and acting.  Unbelievable cinematography.  Amazing characters. Mixture of humour, suspense, action.  Tons of inside jokes and hidden symbolism sprinkled throughout – the show had it all.

Check out the Breaking Bad sub-reddit for all kinds of analysis, memes and more.  MetaFilter also has a thread about the episode.

It will be interesting to see what comes next!

Saturday Snap – En Garde!

A local fencing club was winding up a practice in the same Leisure Centre where Pace just finished swimming lessons. I took him over to peek at the action from the gym door and the members of the group, including a National Champion, could not have been more welcoming when they saw a young kid watching them!

Friday Funk Link – Amazing Book Shelves #book #library #cool #reddit

Just discovered that Reddit has a sub-Reddit dedicated solely to photos of amazing and cool bookshelves.  If you sort it by “Top” vote getting submissions, you might never go to another sub-Reddit again! 😉

Probably a good lesson for libraries in here somewhere too…

I’m pretty sure I have most of this on a VHS tape somewhere but nice to have it online for easy access and archival purposes…

Music Monday (Er, Tuesday) – “But I can’t be late/’Cause then I guess I just won’t get paid/These are the days/When you wish your bed was already made”

Somehow I thought yesterday was Tuesday so I’ll do this week’s Music Monday post today instead (and I’ll probably post Saturday Snap on Friday and Friday Fun Link on Saturday the way I’m going!)
