Music Monday – “My heart’s like an open book/For the whole world to read/Sometimes nothing keeps me together/At the seams”

Shea and I watched “The Dirt“, the new Netflix Motley Crue biopic this weekend.

Lots of songs that were a soundtrack to my high school years for sure including this one…

Home Sweet Home” – Motley Crue

The Eleven Month Countdown to Next Year’s Trip?

Just like I did after we got home last year, I immediately began thinking about and researching where we might like to go on a tropical vacation next winter.

Here’s my shortlist of destinations (but not hotels – though I’ve started that list too!) so far:

1. Isla Mujeres

– both times we’ve gone there on day trips from Cancun, Isla Mujeres has been the highlight of our entire week.  So why not stay there for the entire week?  Plus Isla Mujeres is fairly touristy but still retains some rustic, rural, authentic charm that you’ll never get in Cancun or Playa del Carmen.  It reminds me of one of our other absolute places on earth – if Cancun is Honolulu, Isla Mujeres is like Kauai (which is perhaps our favourite place we’ve ever been!)

2. Puerto Vallarta
We haven’t been to the Pacific coast since our first all-inclusive and never to Puerto Vallarta which many people we know rave about. In all honesty, going to the Pacific coast is probably a good way to save a bit of money as well since resorts on that side tend to be cheaper than Cancun/Mayan options.

3. Huatulco
A place I rarely heard of until recently but which is now a very popular destination.  Everyone mentions how much hotter it is than other places in Mexico – maybe low 30’s instead of high 20’s on average?

4. Dominican Republic
We’ve only been once but it was one of our best trips/resorts ever so would be good to go back. We did the main area of Punta Cana but La Romana sounds interesting.

5. Cuba
Pretty much the same reason as the Dominican – we’ve only been twice but have enjoyed it both times (Shea says Iberostar Varadero was one of her top resorts of all-time).  Trade-off is resorts in Cuba that tend to be just a bit “less” of everything due to lack of supplies and supply lines – food not quite as good, pools that may turn green if the resort runs out of chlorine, minimal wifi, stuff like that.

6.Mayan Riviera
We’ve really shied away from options in the Mayan with reports of horrible seaweed but there are lots of great resorts with all kinds of unique offerings that might convince us to return.

7. Playa Mujeres
I think this is also another relatively new area north of Cancun with only a few resorts so far.  But might be worth a try for something new/different.

8.  Jamaica
One of the few places you can get direct flights to from Regina (along with Mexico, Cuba and Dominican) but the only one of those four we’ve never been to at all.

9. Holbox Island
Another island near Cancun, this one is perhaps even less touristy than Isla Mujeres.

10. Cancun (again)
This is last on my list but given the variety of options, the price points available, proximity to the airport for the hotel zone and the overall decent beaches, I could see us ending up somewhere in Cancun again next year.

Saturday Snap – Puddle Jumpin’

If you get out early enough, you get to break the ice on the puddles!

Friday Fun Link – “Any time you win five Stanley Cups, there’s a certain amount of mess that comes on the tail end of that.”

The only thing that’s made the Flames’ amazing season better is watching the ongoing dumpster fire that is their provincial rivals, the Edmonton Oilers, not just this year but over the past ten years.

The smugness and arrogance in this clip from Oilers’ Old Boys Club management is an oldie but a goldie (oh, and by the way, the Oilers’ last Stanley Cup was in 1990 and they’re about to miss the playoffs again this year having missed every season but one since 2006 (which tied a futility record).  In 2006, they did make it to the Finals in a Cinderella run but end up losing in the Stanley Cup finals, all while having more #1 overall draft picks and high draft picks over a short period of time than any team in history.)

Five Things You Should Remember To Do During An All-Inclusive Holiday (That Many People Forget)

  1. Reapply SunscreenI’m really bad for putting sunscreen on in the morning then forgetting to put it on again, at least until my skin starts to radiate heat outwards. 🙁
  2. Stay HydratedRelated to that last one, there are a lot of things that can make you feel ill on a tropical holiday.  When people get an upset stomach, I often read “ate bad food” as an explanation.  But my own experiences when I’ve gotten a bit sick on holiday in the past is that it’s likely “too much sun” that was the likely culprit.
  3. Check Expiry Dates Before You GoIt’s easy when packing to just throw a bunch of stuff in your suitcase, especially if you go on regular holidays and take the same stuff year after year – from sunscreen to medications, but it’s worthwhile to check expiry dates so you don’t end up with something that’s not going to help when you most need it and/or you end up having to pay the outrageous prices in the hotel gift shop.
  4. Keep Your Sandals CloseIt’s nice to kick off your sandals and go for a walk on the beach or to walk around the resort but, though it’s a bit of a pain, it’s often handy to carry them with you – either if you hit an area where the sun has made the wood or concrete you’re walking on too hot for bare feet or if you have to go into a washroom.
  5. Seat Booking TrickThis one is more of an “unethical life hack” than something to remember to do *at* an all-inclusive.  But if it works, it can help get your holiday off to an extra relaxing start!  Most airplanes allow you to book 24-hours in advance and will show you a seating chart with available seats.  Most of the jets we fly to all-inclusives on have two rows of three seats each so, if you’re a family of four, your natural inclination is to book seats together – maybe two in a row in front and two in a row behind or maybe two on one side of the plane and two across from each other.  But if the plane appears to have some empty seats when you’re booking, one trick I’ve discovered is to book seats near the back of the plane (since planes tend to fill up from front to back) and book one pair of people in an aisle and a window seat leaving the middle seat open then do the same thing in the row behind or across from them (whatever’s available.)  The advantage of doing it this way is that a solo traveler – maybe the older fifth child or a mother-in-law who’s coming along with her family on vacation – is less likely to book themselves a middle seat then either the aisle or window seat beside another couple who’ve booked two seats in the usual way – either two together by the window or two by the aisle.  Then, once the plane is fully loaded and about to take off, there’s a pretty good chance you end up having three seats between two people.  And if someone does end up having to sit between you in the middle seat, they’re likely happy to take either the window or aisle if you say “Oops, I must’ve clicked the wrong seat by mistake” or even explain why they ended up in a middle seat.  (This happened once when a big, burly guy came down the aisle, saw Pace and I sitting in a row with the middle seat open and looked *really* angry.  I thought he was mad thinking he’d have to wedge in between us but his wife explained he was afraid of flying and was hoping to sit beside her for comfort but by the time they booked, two seats together weren’t available.  We quickly agreed to shift around to accommodate them and after popping a Xanax, this big burly former pro hockey player was fast asleep on his wife’s shoulder! Even funnier, I thought I’d get the short straw and have to wedge in beside them but our shy kid, Pace, was like “Nah, I can stay in my seat.  No worries!”)

Music Monday – “So needless to say/I’m odds and ends/I’ll be stumbling away/Slowly learning that life is OK/Say after me/It’s no better to be safe than sorry

I don’t normally add a lot of my own thoughts to Music Monday posts but wow, hearing this song that I loved as a kid (yes, the innovative video was a big part of that!) slowed down and done acoustically really makes it heartbreaking and adds a feeling of nostalgia (in multiple ways) that the original didn’t have.

The kids are obviously living up to the title of the board game by beating their parents pretty handily in a game of “Beat The Parents” tonight. 🙂
