Saturday Snap – A Pretty Fun Book Recommendation!

One of the library’s board members is also a regular volunteer for RPL’s Good Food Box Program which is offered in partnership with a local food security agency.

During one of our regular chats, we talked about aging parents and, being a librarian to the core, I ended up recommending a book that I had just read myself which I thought she might be interested in.

She put it on hold and even made a point of coming over to show me when it came in earlier this week!  🙂

Friday Fun Link – The Apology Generator

I wonder if there’s anyone I know that could use this Made-In-Regina Apology Generator web site?

Throwback Thursday – The State of Book Publishing in Alberta

Though this recent clip only popped up on my Facebook feed the other day, it did remind me of my time in Alberta (2001-2004) when I worked with the Writers Guild of Alberta where part of my work included helping jointly plan the annual Alberta Book Awards with the Book Publishers Association of Alberta.

Haven’t watched it yet but I suspect a lot of issues that existed back then – lack of government support, lack of skilled staff willing to work for low wages, lack of consumers buying local books (though perhaps this has changed a bit with the recent “Elbows Up” movement?), growth of self-publishing and vanity publishing options, competition from new entertainment options such as at-home streaming services and so on.

Ironically, a few years later, I’d find myself back in Saskatchewan, working in libraries but also serving on the Board of Coteau Books.  And ten years after joining that board, being one of the two Board Members who most directly dealt with the bankruptcy of the organization once that became an unavoidable reality.

But that’s a story for another day…

It’s The First Snow of the Year

One of my favourite traditions on this blog for my least favourite events (hopefully today’s snow won’t stay since we have plus temps in the forecast for the next week or more!)

NHL Is Back!

Can the Oilers threepeat as Stanley Cup Final losers?  God, I hope not.  My heart can’t take it.  Hope they miss the playoffs completely!

AI but still funny…

Wisdom Wednesday – If Someone Says Covid Is “Over”…

Definitely don’t listen to the politicians.  And even many of the medical professionals misunderstand the ongoing risks.

If you want to know the true status of Covid, listen to the insurance actuaries whose whole business model is predicated on predicting the actual financial costs of Covid to their companies (no different than insurance companies increasingly refusing to insure property in areas most at danger to the risks of climate change – floods, wildfires, etc.)

Death is the ultimate impact but is anyone in your organization tracking the usage of sick time?  And is there a plan to address that increased usage (beyond “everyone left picks up the slack?”)

This is not just an issue for our current workforce.  This is going to be an issue for at least a generation and possibly longer.

I’m Not A Fan of Hypocrisy (So What Am I Hypocritical About?)

On National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, I’m thinking about some of the conflicted views I hold.

For instance, my dad recently completed the sale of our family farm that was previously Indigenous land. I have already and will continue to benefit greatly from the sale of that land while Indigenous people continue to fight for basic rights, services and compensation for various historical injustices.

Similarly, both myself and Shea benefit financially from mineral rights related to oil production at our respective family farms (both from our maternal sides of the family) even as we are very conscious of and aware of climate change and again, that this land was originally Indigenous land.

We also travel by airplane at least a couple times a year, stay at all-inclusives which are horrible for the environment and local economy.

When I was young and idealistic, I made sure to only buy ethical RSPs.  Now my financial advisor is like “Here’s one with great returns because it is heavy on US private health care companies” and I tell her to go ahead and buy it.  (Yuck!)

I am a strong union supporter but I also see many issues with unions and I also often bend the union rules myself as I give equal weight to my responsibilities as a “professional” even though this isn’t a legally defined concept like a CBA is.

I don’t know – I guess the main thing is to be aware of your hypocrises but we all have our blind spots and/or struggles to reconcile our own inconsistencies.

Like one person I know who has told me multiple times that she’s a feminist but is also actively involved in advocating for policies that will hurt women financially.  I’m sure this person struggles with this too (or at least I hope they do.).

But today was NDTR and although the family and I spent it outdoors, enjoying all that nature has to offer, and thinking about the troubled history of our province, I did it all without wearing an orange shirt…

Music Monday – “Take me to the place where you go/Where nobody knows/If it’s night or day/Please don’t put your life in the hands/Of a rock ‘n’ roll band/Who’ll throw it all away.”

“(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?” was released thirty years ago this week and after years of acrimony, Oasis is in the middle of a massive reunion tour with rumours that it’s going to be extended into 2026.

One of the major highlights of my entire life was being in England in fall 1995 during the height of the “Cool Brittannia” movement, the Britpop wars between Oasis and Blur, and just the general sense of optimism and joy that took over an entire country.
