Friday Fun Link – “The Years Have Flown By” 50th Anniversary Charter Plane Ride

I alluded to this in Thursday’s post when I wrote “the years have flown by” about my mom and dad’s 50th Anniversary.  But I didn’t want to give away the big surprise I had planned for their anniversary gift knowing they read my blog.

Honestly, it was a bit tough trying to come up with an idea for a 50th wedding anniversary gift for a few reasons:

* Covid being out of control in Saskatchewan made any large-scale anniversary tea/gathering too risky.  Same with some splashy expensive all expenses paid trip to Hawaii or Mexico (plus I love my parents but that’s stretching my budget quite a bit too!) 😉

* Mom and dad probably don’t need any more “stuff” at this point in their lives so that rules out golden dishes, golden chalices, golden anything really!

So what else can you do that’s unique and memorable and symbolic?

I had tossed around a few ideas but then it hit me – in separate trips to Hawaii, we did both a submarine and a helicopter excursion with M&D.  But, as far as I knew, they’d never been up on a small plane.

I also saw on Facebook recently that someone I knew from the Sask Book Awards board of directors had done a trip in a small plane over the Qu’Appelle Valley.  As well, I knew Shea’s parents had flown with a family friend over Weyburn so all that inspired me to do something similar with my parents.

Originally I booked the charter for Saturday October 23 which is their actual anniversary date but the plane we were recommended to use was for sale and the Regina Flying Club couldn’t guarantee it would be available later this month.  As well, in Saskatchewan, no guarantees the weather will hold either and though they could go up if it was cold and snowy, that didn’t seem as enjoyable as a nice fall day.

So I moved the date up by a couple weeks and, other than a bit of a forest fire smoke reducing our long distance visibility somewhat (but not nearly as bad as it could’ve been), we had an amazing flight to various spots that have a lot of meaning to mom and dad – the Qu’Appelle Valley, Katepwa Beach where all of us have spent so much time in our lives, over our family cottage, a few times circling our family farm, into town over the farms of numerous family friends and past the historic Bell Barn then a few circles over the town of Indian Head spotting so many spots that have deep meaning – our house, the high school I attended, the hospital where mom worked as a nurse for 30+ years, the elevators where dad hauled so much grain over the years.

After that, we followed the #1 highway back into Regina and our pilot treated us to a couple extra circles over the city skyline and Mosaic Stadium (I think maybe we were waiting for permission to land?) then finally, touch down and we were back on solid ground.  (And a chuckle at the fire trucks by the Regina Flying Club – “are those for us?”)

It was better than I could’ve ever imagined and if you’re reading this and looking for a unique outing/experience/gift for yourself or someone you know, I highly recommend the Regina Flying Club.

Here’s a video I took of our takeoff – sorry my pan of the cockpit is so poor – it was a pretty cramped space!

Throwback Thursday – #tbt – Wedding Dance (June 2003)

This is a picture of my parents at my cousin’s wedding dance in Calgary in 2003.  (His marriage lasted about three years while mom and dad will be celebrating 50 years of marriage later this month!  But to be fair, my cousin had better luck the second time around – and has been married to his second wife for probably 15 years?)

Anyhow, the years have really flown by…and more to come on that note! 🙂

One of Saskatchewan’s Highest Profile Anti-Vaxxers & Former PPC Candidate Rumoured To Be In Saskatoon Covid Ward

But I don’t think he qualifies for the Herman Cain Award…yet.

Sort of deviously brilliant how Dr. Kyle found out – he just called the hospital and asked!

But it definitely feels like a throwback to a kinder/gentler pre-Internet, pre-social media time when you can just call up a hospital to inquire about whether someone is present or not and…they tell you!  Plus, if they say where they are, that might reveal what their reason for hospitalization is (“Mr. Smith is on 3F” <checks> – oh, the cardiac ward.).

A Few Random Thoughts From 2021 @Sask_NDP Virtual Convention

Shea and I signed up to attend the virtual Sask NDP convention this weekend.

We’ve been to a handful of conventions over the years since our first in 2009 – mostly in years when there was a leadership vote but also as delegates from our constituency on occasion.  (With that said, we’re not actively involved at the constituency level right now so paid the shot ourselves.).

  • First off, the virtual convention format worked very well for the most part.  LumiAGM was the platform used and it was like Zoom but on steroids with hundreds of people attending concurrently at different points.
  • Of course, like Zoom, there were the odd tech glitches – people forgetting to mute mics, people leaving cameras on which may or may not impact the performance of the whole platform, etc.  Some less tech-savvy/people with poor Internet may have struggled and though there was a 1-800 number of tech support, I know firsthand from my day job how hard it can be to try to offer tech help over the phone.
  • One HUGE advantage to being a virtual convention – we hooked up one laptop to our TV and were able to do all sorts of tasks while monitoring the convention – dishes, laundry, making zucchini muffins, etc.  *Much* better than being stuck in a hotel ballroom or convention centre for a couple days!
  • The convention was even portable – at one point, we had to take our daughter to an art class and were able to continue listening through Shea’s phone as I was driving!
  • (Of course, we missed the social aspects – the dinners with friends, the drinks after the day ends, the karaoke.).
  • Arguably the most important part of the convention was the leadership vote which Ryan Meili won with 72% support.

  • As far as I know, there was no threshold for it to be considered a success – I guess 51% would be considered a “win” just like if you win a squeaker of an election as the NDP have often been on both the winning and losing side of close races where candidates are separated by less than a single percentage point.
  • But that result means slightly more than 2/3 of the party support Ryan’s continued leadership but 1/3 are unhappy which is, frankly, understandable.  Heck, I’ve supported Ryan since 2009 and I thought being led by a doctor during a pandemic should mean better results in the last election.  (To put it another way, as someone observed on Reddit, “Meili’s a doctor who ran *towards* an emergency, choosing to practice medicine as Covid hit the province while Scott Moe runs away from emergencies” – an allusion to the fact that Moe has DUIs on his record, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident and even killed someone in a vehicle accident.
  • At the same time, things were relatively calm in October 2020 in terms of Covid cases numbers, hospitalizations and deaths leading up to Sask’s provincial election.  Someone told me there were literally zero deaths in the month leading up to that election – not sure if that’s true – but with vaccines on the horizon and little idea yet of how virulent Delta would be (or more accurately, how few would choose to be vaccinated against it), no one could predict the horrors of the fourth wave (well, except most medical professionals, many members of the media and even a few observant librarians!) 😉
  • Anyhow, I sensed that there was a recognition among the membership, even among people who may not be huge Meili supporters, that having gone through three leadership contests in the past decade (unfortunately, unavoidable as both previous leaders failed to keep their seats) the party would be doing itself no favours by going to the expense and possibly divisive process of a leadership contest instead of sticking with the leader they’ve got.
  • Speaking of divisions, since I’m not super-actively involved in the party anyhow, I was particularly heartened to see endorsements of various candidates for President, Treasurer, and various other executive roles crossing the old loyalties that I was familiar with – hey, that guy supported Ryan and he’s supporting Candidate A for President but that person who also supported Ryan says she’s supporting Candidate B for President.
  • Overall, it was a great experience and, like so many other sectors, it’ll be interesting to see if a “virtual” option might be provided in the future, even if conventions go back to being in-person for the most part.  I know I appreciated being able to watch in my PJ’s in my living room while doing chores instead of the expense and time commitment of driving to Saskatoon or wherever.
  • Oh, and I think someone mentioned the convention was hosted/broadcast from the Saskatoon Inn.  If so, I sure hope it got a thorough sanitizing/fumigating after the recent PPC federal election party a couple weeks ago! 😉

(One final thought – no idea how it may have influenced the leadership vote but Ryan’s speech was one of the best I’ve heard him give – humble, inspiring, personal, political and powerful.  I have no idea how he even finished after talking about his dad’s stroke putting him in ICU and how, if that happened today, his dad might not make it due to the pressures Covid patients are unnecessarily putting on ICUs right now.)

Saturday Snap – Spud Drug Deal?

My coworker hooked me up with a guy selling discounted 50lb bags of oversized and misshapen potatoes (who, of course, turns out to be a regular at my library.)

At any rate, pulling up at his house, I felt like I was getting in the middle of a shady drug deal – cars lining up, cash changing hands, frenzied conversations about the best way to store and prepare the product! 🙂
