Music Monday – “Well, there’s people and more people/What do they know-know-know/Go to work in some high rise/And vacation down at the Gulf of Mexico, ooh yeah”

Hard to believe it’s been two years since we moved into our new house – time flies but a good reminder that time is pretty meaningless in the age of Covid! 😉 “Pink Houses” – John Mellencamp

Music Monday – “I put two and one together/And you know that’s not an even sum/And I know just where to catch you with/That well-known smoking gun”

“Smoking Gun” – Robert Cray

Music Monday – “You shut your mouth/How can you say/I go about things the wrong way?/I am human and I need to be loved/Just like everybody else does”

“How Soon is Now?” – Johnny Marr

Music Monday – “When I’m in the shower/I’m afraid to wash my hair/’Cause I might open my eyes and find someone standing there”

Halloween’s over but this was our song of the year as Sasha kept singing it over and over after hearing it on my Halloween playlist… “Somebody’s Watching Me” – Rockwell (featuring Michael Jackson)

Music Monday – “I still remember when thirty was old/And my biggest fear was September when he had to go/A few cards and letters and one long distance call/We drifted away like the leaves in the fall”

This is one of those songs that I have to rewind and listen to an extra time or two every time it comes on. I came across this version which is arguably more poignant than the original as Ms. Carter is now singing about youthful innocence from a perspective of an older woman rather than […]

Community group Millennium for All is fighting for welcoming, just, accessible and fully funded libraries. “Millennium For All” – John K. Samson

Music Monday – “I’m alright with a slow burn/Takin’ my time, let the world turn/I’m gonna do it my way, it’ll be alright/If we burn it down and it takes all night/It’s a slow burn, yeah”

“Slow Burn” – Kasey Musgraves

Music Monday – “The secret rules of engagement are hard to endorse/When the appearance of conflict meets the appearance of force”

“Grace Too” – Twin Flames (Tragically Hip Cover)

Music Monday – “Got to give us what we want/Gotta give us what we need/Our freedom of speech is freedom or death/We got to fight the powers that be”

Still probably a bit too heavy on Boomer Rock Classics but at least they’re trying… I posted the #1 pick just a few months ago so will post the #2 song which definitely shows how the list has changed… “Fight The Power” […]

Music Monday – “I’m just a singer of simple songs/I’m not a real political man/I watch CNN, but I’m not sure I can tell you/The difference in Iraq and Iran” or “Hey Uncle Sam, put your name at the top of his list/And the Statue of Liberty started shakin’ her fist/And the eagle will fly man, it’s gonna be hell/When you hear mother freedom start ringin’ her bell”

Is it possible to track the polarization of American politics to two very different country songs released in the wake of 9/11 – one contemplative and questioning while the other is aggressive and angry? Not saying this is the reason politics is so polarized but definitely a reflection of a moment where American politics got […]
