National Do Not Call Registry

Not sure if you've seen this or not but Canada finally has a national do-not-call registry and it's dead easy to sign up.

Half watching election results and not really sure why we're having this election – is anything going to be significantly different than what we had before?  Doesn't really look like it at this point…

  1. Yeah, I love the concept behind this, as I get really a LOT of unsolicited calls. So, I promptly put my name on the do not call registry.
Then I read the fine print: https://www.lnnte-dncl.gc.ca/cofi-fico-eng
That … really doesn't help much in cutting down the unwanted calls. Political parties, charities, newspaper subscriptions, consumer polls, and people with whom you have existing business can still call you. So, like, I have a Mastercard and still I get a gazillion calls from them offering me different variations of the MC. But will they keep calling me since – as an MC owner – I'm an “existing customer”? I find I get only a small amount of calls from people actually trying to sell me something, yet I consider all those unwanted calls as “telemarketing.”
I hope it cuts down on scams which take advantage of people, because otherwise, this registry could be just a lot of administration.

  2. Well, if it only stops the “You've already won a trip to St. Lucia” calls, I'll be happy! Or the “We are calling to offer you a discount on your existing credit card rate” – I really hate those ones!
