CMV: There’s Nothing Wrong with Language Death and Attempts at Revitalizing Dying Languages Are A Complete Waste of Time and Effort

I’ve got numerous sub-Reddits that I love including one called Change My View (r/changemyview) where people pose their positions on sensitive (and not-so-sensitive) topics and ask others to try to convince them to change their mind. And unlike debate on 99% of the Internet, the respondents are often successful in changing the view of the original poster! A recent questions […]

Friday Fun Link – Calgary Stampede Debuts 66 New Midway Foods From Great to Gross

Red velvet mini donuts.  Chocolate dipped cookie dough.  Deep fried butter.  Scorpion pizza. One of these things is *not* like the other! 😉

Music Monday – “Every four way stop that I approached/Hey, I was on the right/When I drove past your house again/Hey, like I always do/I think about the one thing in my life that didn’t come true”

An entire hour and a half long Fred Eaglesmith concert, taped in Holland? Man, I love the Internet for so many reasons…it eliminates time, distance and provides access to stuff you’d never see otherwise. I can’t imagine what it’ll be like in 5-10 years when literally everything that’s ever been broadcast, everything we can see […]

Why UPS Drivers Won’t Turn Left

I’m not so strident as to never do left turns or try to avoid them at all costs. But I’m not a fan of them generally and, if given the choice, will often do three right turns or go somewhat out of my way to avoid one left turn. I’m glad to hear UPS agrees.

Suggested Reading Times on Books – Yay or Nay?

Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of Reddit, did something fairly unique with his first book, “Without Their Permission” by including a “suggesting reading time” logo on the back cover.  This logo estimates the book would take about five hours to read and that this is the equivalent of a cross-country flight from New York to San Francisco. […]

Happy 11th Anniversary, Shea!

I posted this picture on our third anniversary back in 2006 but see that the link to the graphic’s ended up broken during one of my blog moves. So here’s the image once again – my favourite wedding picture (well, not counting the more spontaneous one of Shea running out of the water just as a […]

Friday Fun Link – Russian “Human Flies” Illegally Climb the Highest Structure in China and Second Highest in the World

Definitely don’t watch this video if you suffer from vertigo…

Blog Holiday

Expect minimal blogging for the next week or so as we’re on a family holiday…

Another Great Thing About Reddit…

…it’s a great resource to get non-traditional thoughts, pictures and feedback on local news and events. Just like my recent post on the value of Google Street Maps as a way to “travel” without leaving home, Reddit can help you do the same, especially when there is a current news event happening in a specific […]

Travel The World Without Leaving Your Laptop

The day before we left for Hawaii a couple years ago, I did a post summarizing how much of a role various web sites – from Google to Reddit to Trip Advisor – played in helping to plan and just generally build excitement for our trip. I mentioned Google Maps in passing in that post […]
