Friday Fun Link – DiscoverReads

DiscoverReads.com is a new site that provides book recommendations based on which books you tell it you already like/have read based on a five star rating system. I spent some time entering a bunch of books that I liked (realising that most of the books I rated ended up getting between 3-5 stars since what’s […]

Saturday Snap – The Beauty of SILS

One of the great advantages of being in a province-wide system now is that there is a much greater chance that a patron can find a book they’re looking for, even if it’s a bit more obscure or was published a long time ago. I recently had this experience myself when I was looking through […]

Notes from Rachel Van Riel Workshop at Regina Public Library

RPL hosted a workshop with well-known library consultant, Rachel Van Riel of OpeningTheBook.com today, the only Saskatchewan stop on a cross-Canada tour that will also take her to Alberta and Ontario.  The information presented was excellent and I’d highly recommend her to anyone looking for ideas on how to improve their libraries. As always, a […]

Five Hits on Thanksgiving Day

Hockey The Flames got spanked in their first game of the season against the Oilers (who almost made me want to cheer with them with what a dynamic young team they’ve assembled.  But then I remembered that only could happen after they’ve sucked for much of the last decade so the feeling passed.)  Topping the […]

Some Thoughts on “One Day” by David Nicholls

Stealing an idea from yesterday’s list, I want to talk a bit more about the book “One Day” by David Nicholls since I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it all day. Instead of doing a traditional book review though, I thought I’d do a list (big surprise there!) of some of the reasons […]

10 Things I Thought I Might Blog About Today

Just as TV and video games are changing the neural pathways of kids, I think having a blog has had a similar effect on me. Throughout the day, I frequently think “Oh, that witty comment is something I should blog about” or “Hmm, that idea I came across on Huffington Post deserves sharing” or “I […]

The Sriracha Cookbook

I discovered Sriarcha (Rooster) hot sauce when I was first introduced to Vietnamese restaurants.  I still remember the first time I tried it – like so many folks, I suspect the “well, it looks like ketchup, maybe it tastes like ketchup?” thought process was in place.  Of course, that’s not quite true and like the […]

Friday Fun Link – “It’s A Book” by Lane Smith

Our children’s librarians have been raving about this book and passing it around the library.  I’ve got to say I agree – it’s hilarious! (And yes, I see the irony in posting the YouTube video promoting a book that shows the advantages of old tech over new tech!)

Purple Cows & Public Libraries

Recently finished Seth Godin”s book “The Purple Cow” which has a main premise that businesses should no longer do mass marketing to the big bulge that is the early and late majority but instead, focus on niche marketing to the much smaller but much more rabid early adopters group who are much more likely to […]

Google Lit Trips

Google Lit Trips is a pretty cool site where users can submit their own mash-ups combining Google Earth files with the places visited in famous novels.  Although it's aimed mostly at teachers looking to teach literature in a different way, this site can be enjoyed by any book lovers.(via MetaFilter)
