Five Not So Good Things About Librarians

Following up on yesterday’s post listing Five Good Things About Librarians, here are some generalizations about the weaknesses many librarians share…

1. Librarians are often extremely anal retentive
What else would you expect from a profession which has the organization and classification of the world’s information as one of its core purposes? Part of this is that I think we like routine and order and this makes us perhaps more resistant to accepting change or even being nimble compared to other sectors.

2. Librarians have an inferiority complex
Because we’re not “professionals” (at least in the same sense that doctors, lawyers, engineers, nurses, teachers are professionals) but we have similar levels of education, if not more, that often leaves us with an inferiority complex about our place in the social hierarchy. This also manifests itself with the ongoing debates about “professional librarians”, “para-professionals” and who can be properly called a “librarian” within the four walls of our buildings.

3. Librarians aren’t as smart as we think we are
Many of my points in this list are basically the inverse of the “good things about librarians” points I listed yesterday. For example, although we know a lot about a lot of things which is one of our strengths, often that knowledge isn’t as deep as it for a specialist in an area. Put another way, we may know a little bit about technology and a little bit about politics and a little bit about community development and a little about marketing but rarely will you find a librarian who is an expert in multiple areas.

4. Librarians overvalue our importance to society
Another corollary to yesterday’s post – I mean, anybody who claims that their profession “embodies democracy” as I said yesterday probably has a highly developed sense of self-regard! I think the problem is an issue of perspective – often, libraries (and librarians) don’t make an immediate, visible impact in the same way that doctors, firefighters and even highway repair workers do. Many times, our impact is much deeper, less visible and stretched over a much longer period of time. (How many people in society developed a lifelong love of reading via childhood visits to the library?)

5. Librarians chase trends, we don’t create them
Again, thinking of librarians within the context of the wider world, are their any recent examples of where we’ve been in the lead of a new trend instead of chasing what others have done? We look to Chapters for ideas on how to design our libraries. We look to Amazon for guidance on promoting e-books and ideas for how to enhance our OPAC. We look to retail for ideas on everything from open hours to customer service principles to merchandising. I also think that we missed the boat long ago – libraries should’ve been the ones inventing sites like Wikipedia and Google, Facebook and Yelp. Of course, it’s unlikely libraries would’ve created these exact sites. But is there any reason we couldn’t have developed localized forms of these types of sites?

Five Good Things About Librarians

A few generalizations about my chosen profession…

1. Librarians know a lot about a lot
You’ll probably never meet a class of people who have broader range of interests than librarians.

2. Librarians live to help
For most librarians, a desire to help other people is core to their existence.

3. Librarians embody democracy
By embracing values including equality, neutrality, fairness and knowledge while operating in a public space that is open and accessible to all with no judgment or charge.

4. Librarians defend freedom
By supporting the right of every individual to read what they choose, whether that’s Mein Kampf, Harry Potter or Sylvia Browne (though probably nothing has pained me more in my professional career than approving Purchase Requests for Sylvia Browne!)

5. Librarians make a positive, long-term, tangible impact on the communities in which they operate.
Nuff said!

Music Monday – “Your smile is like a breath of spring/Your voice is like summer rain/And I cannot compete with you/Jolene” (Bonus: Incomplete List of Bands I’ve Seen Live)

Dolly Parton was the voice in a movie we watched this weekend (Gnomeo & Juliet – very cute!) and that somehow led to me thinking about the various concerts I’ve seen in my life (Dolly being one of the Top Five believe it or not!)

Off the top of my head, here’s a very incomplete of some of the bands I’ve seen live – either as headliners, opening acts or as part of a festival package.  For that reason, it’s hard to list them all as I’ve gone to many festivals that had multiple artists on the bill (which usually means I remember the headliner and maybe one standout who grabs me but forget everybody else, even if they may have gone on to great things!)

Sappy Sunday – Some Things Are More Important Than Hockey

The NHL playoffs continue and the final four are down to San Jose versus Vancouver and Boston versus Tampa Bay.

In terms of who I think will win the Cup this year, I’m getting razzed as anti-Canadian by my Vancouver relatives but, as a Calgary Flames fan, I just can’t force myself to cheer for Vancouver!  I’m also cheering against Tampa Bay since they beat the Flames for the Cup in 2004 and if they were to win it again less than a decade later, that would re-open some painful old wounds.
So I’m hoping for a Boston – San Jose final (although the Canucks beat the Sharks to go up 3-1 this afternoon so it’s looking like Vancouver will make the final.  In that case, I hope the Canucks keep the record of Canadian futility that the Flames started in 2004.  Since then, Calgary, Edmonton and Ottawa have all made it to the final, only to fall short.  So maybe it will be Boston – Vancouver but if so, I *really* hope Boston wins!    Of course, there are also other historical precedents that all but guarantee Vancouver will win this year! 😉  But if they don’t, perhaps next year Winnipeg will be the first Canadian team to win the Cup since 1993 – that’d be okay by me!)

Anyhow, I came across this story about a special inspiration for Tampa Bay’s goaltender, Dwayne Roloson and it’s a good reminder that there are some things more important than hockey.  So if Tampa Bay OR Vancouver win the Cup, it’s not the end of the world.  (Well, maybe if Vancouver wins.  See, I can’t help myself!)

Saturday Snap – Happy Fourth Birthday, Pace!

Although I’m not as obsessive as those folks who take a picture-a-day of themselves or their babies, I have tried to take a photo of Pace every few months and now every year.  I didn’t plan it this way initially but now always include an Oscar the Grouch doll we bought him when he was born and who ended up in a few photos with the newborn Pace.  (By way of explanation, “Oscar” was our pet name for Pace while he was still in utero because he was occasionally pretty grouchy, kicking and punching his mommy!)

This is a quick little video I made for his fourth birthday today (and yes, when it ends up Vimeo instead of YouTube, that’s a pretty big clue that my interpretation of copyright law is different than YouTube’s! <grin>)…

Friday Fun Link – Don’t Say Gay…

…say “Takei” according to Star Trek’s George Takei who is taking on a controversial Tennessee law by suggesting people could use his surname as a replacement for the word “gay”.

“Daddy, You Need Mommy To Give You ‘Talking Real’ Needles!”

Four years ago, I never imagined that I’d be laying in bed tonight with my perfect, wonderful son, having this conversation:

“What am I made of, daddy?”
“You’re made of lots of stuff – bones and muscles and skin.”
“And what else?”
“Well, did you know that most people are mostly made up of water?”
“I’m not made up of mostly water.”
“Yes you are.  It’s science.”
“I’m not water!  I’m made of people stuff.”
“Should we call mommy in here to tell you?  She’s a nurse so she’ll know.”
“I think mommy needs to give you ‘talking real’ needles!”
“Mommy, can you come in here and tell Pace what he’s mostly made of?”
(Mommy comes in the room)
“Mommy, what am I mostly made of?”
“Poop!”
(Mommy leaves the room)

So I don’t think the issue got settled but nonetheless, happy fourth birthday to our little man, our Spaceman, our Peso, Pace Owen Hammond!

Everyone says it but I can’t believe how the time has flown!  (PS – not sure how he got the shiner in the photo below but I think he ran into a table at a 50th Birthday party we attended in Calgary.  I couldn’t help but joke “You know you had a good time in Calgary when you go to a party and wake up the next day with no idea how you got a shiner!”)

OldManSearch: “John Stewart Jew”, “weather indianapolis today”, “cold toes”

A young man claims to have set-up a Twitter account for his 81-year old grandpa after telling him that Twitter is a search engine like Google.

These are the search terms the Grandpa is (supposedly) entering.

I suspect that this will turn out to be a hoax (and I hope so – some of the posts aren’t funny but can be quite sad or weird.)
