“Rome Sweet Rome” – A Very Cool Web-Generated Novella

A Redditor asks if a modern battalion of a couple thousand Marines could beat the hundreds of thousands of men in the Roman Legion to take over the entire Roman Empire?

That leads to one Redditor writing it up the idea as a very engaging novella, a dedicated sub-Reddit for further discussion of the idea and even talk of a Hollywood movie!

Letting your child use an upturned picnic table as a playhouse when camping… 😉

Friday Fun Link – Minus.com

Quinn Dupont was one my classmates in library school who was a constant source of what was the latest and greatest in the technology world.

That continues to this day.  He recently posted Minus.com on his Facebook feed – a new site to simplify sharing of files that allows a huge amount of storage and also adds some social elements that other similar sits lack.

Check it out and follow me for a special surprise (er, except that short video I uploaded isn’t working for me – maybe it takes some time to process after 100% uploading like on YouTube?)

Time Travel, Being Violated By A Police Officer and An Early Hint o’ My Librarian Tendencies

We were at a wedding in my hometown about a month ago.  Sitting at the table during the reception, I was chatting with one of the people I hadn’t seen in a long time but who had lived next door to our house for most of her years in Indian Head.  She was a friend of my sister’s and a couple years younger than me.

“I’m not surprised you became a librarian,” she said.

“Why?” I asked, thinking she might comment on how well-read I was, how intelligent I was or how stunning I looked in a cardigan.

“Well, you were always a bit anal.”

“Really?”

“Oh yeah.  In fact, when I was over visiting Janna, sometimes I’d sneak into your room and re-arrange your action figures you had positioned all around your room.”

“Really??”

“Sure.  I knew you’d hate it.  Isn’t that funny?”

“Yeah.  Funny…ha, ha!”

So, beyond the fact that this earth-shaking violation of my privacy was confessed by someone who has gone on to be a fairly visible member of the City of Regina Police Service, it did make me realise that perhaps my anal retentive tendencies were on display early on.

Which is all a long way to stay that those tendencies still exist and though I try to control them, they manifest themselves in unexpected ways.  Like this blog.

It’s no secret that I try to post at least *something* every day.  And I’ve admitted that when I miss a day, I’ll backdate a post to keep the “daily post” streak going.  (A good hint – if a post is dated for between 11pm-12am, it’s likely a backdated one.)

But I rarely back date multiple missed days, instead just choosing to declare a “blog holiday”.  But after a long weekend away camping in what one local described as “the middle of nowhere” (to be fair, a hotly contested title in Saskatchewan), I’ve decided to go back and do posts for last Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday (which is today as I’m writing this though this post’ll be dated Thursday – got it?)

A Tragic Coincidence for Saskatchewan Hockey

With the death of Wade Belak, the three young NHLers who have died in recent months (also including Derek Boogaard and Rick Rypien) were all born and/or played junior hockey in Saskatchewan.

I suspect their common role as hockey enforcers probably played more of a role in their sudden deaths – two suicides and one accidental (?) overdose – than their common geographic beginnings.  But still a sad connection for my province.

There will no doubt be some hard questions asked of the NHL and NHL Players’ Association in the wake of the death of three NHL tough guys in less than four months. Many will be looking for a link between the jobs Boogaard, Rypien and Belak did and what role it may have played in their deaths. Ultimately, those are questions that do need to be asked, though in a measured manner without leaping to unfounded conclusions based on wild speculation. – Bob McKenzie, TSN

New Prince of Wales Branch Opens in Regina!

This is the first new branch RPL has opened in something like fifteen years.  Congratulations to all involved for all of your good work!

Music Monday – “Rebuild… Rebuild… Rebuild… Rebuild… Rebuild…”

I understand why Steven Page chose to perform a cover of “Hallelujah” at the Jack Layton funeral on Saturday (apparently it was the last song Jack listened to as he slipped away.)

But it got me wondering if there was a song in the BNL catalogue which would’ve also worked?   Thematically (at least in some ways), this one might be it.  In fact, this clip is of Steven Page’s last song during his last concert with BNL.  The band even dedicated it to a young fan who’d recently passed away.

Sad Sunday – Michael Layton & Sarah Campbell’s Eulogies For Their Father

We were away camping this weekend so I just got to see Jack Layton’s funeral tonight when we got home.

It’s hard to choose a saddest or most touching moment from Jack Layton’s funeral on Saturday.  But the videos below were definitely two of them.

As documented on this blog, I’ve had the honour of eulogizing three of my four grandparents.  But I don’t know if I’d be able to do it for either of my parents.  I’m a big emotional marshmallow at the best of times and found it tough enough to get through the eulogies for my grandparents.  I can’t imagine how hard it must be to do this for a parent – and maybe that’s why I found these so touching…

Saturday Snap – Katepwa Sunset

Why do I live in the city instead of at the lake?  I don’t know of a more relaxing place on earth…
