An Analysis of My YouTube Channel

I’ve been uploading videos to YouTube since 2006.

This was the year we got our first digital camera.  It was also the year when I was doing my Masters degree so I was very interested in all kinds of online services including online broadcasting.  We were also living far from home so it was a potential way to share our adventures with people back home (though my blog posts tended to do that more than uploaded video.)

The first video I ever uploaded in October 2006 was to play a prank on my mother-in-law.  I liked that clip for a few different reasons and it even ended up being the concluding statement of a presentation I did about the history and future of online video for a class which turned out to be the best mark of my Masters program!

Since then, I’ve uploaded just over 100 videos (104 as of tonight) with a cumulative total of 120,000 views (average of 1200 per video). This has also resulted in a whopping $9.89 in earnings for me over seven years (plus probably lots more earned for the rights holders for the music I’ve used in some of my most popular videos.)

I tend to think of the videos I’ve uploaded as fitting into one of four categories…

The Quasi-Viral Videos (5 videos, 10,000+ views)
No “Gangnam Style” viral videos for me but I do have a handful that have reached a fairly significant number of people each.

My most viewed video is a montage of shots from when Pace was born set to the song “Tippy Toeing” by Loretta Lynn.  These views are almost completely driven by the song and I’m positive that 99.9% of the views are from people wanting to hear this song.  (Besides being the subject of my first YouTube video, my mother-in-law also plays a role in my most successful video having been the one to tell me about this song.)

My second most viewed video is called “Breast Milk Popsicles” and I can’t decide if the views are from new moms interested in a unique way to serve their milk or from pervs who don’t realise that YouTube probably isn’t the best place to go looking for nudity! (Probably a bit of both.)

My third most viewed is called “Google is Good. Libraries are Better!” and was a conscious attempt to subvert a Google ad campaign where people could easily make their own Google commercials to show how good the product was.  I did this by entering some typical public library reference questions and showing how badly Google did at handling them.  This is probably also the only video where I consciously was trying/hoping to get some viral traction and that felt like something that could “go wide” which it somewhat did.  My biggest regret is not spending some more time to ensure the actual Google results I embedded in the video weren’t more consistently ludicrous (although the one about a person wanting to find out about their grandmother’s history which led to a Google result about finding out what your grandma wants at her funeral is priceless!)

My fourth most viewed is a video of my mom (who, like Shea is an RN) doing a doppler exam of Shea to find Pace’s heartbeat in utero.   The fact that this one has so many views helps reassure me that it wasn’t just pervs looking at the second most viewed video and that there is a genuine hunger for parenting/mothering/pregnancy videos on YouTube.  (I know Shea and I watched a zillion different ones both times we were pregnant!)

My final 10,000+ viewed video is called “Riverdance Baby” and frankly, there are a number of this type of videos on YouTube – many with more views and many with less.  I do think there’s a lesson in the importance of how you title your videos if you want views – probably using terms people will be likely to use (“Riverdance”, “Baby”) is better than trying to get too fancy with your titles (“Celtic Dancing Baby” or whatever.)

Popular videos (5 Videos, 1,000 – 10,000 views)
I have another five videos that form a second tier of popularity.  These run the gambit from a montage of shots from my year at FIMS to the beach in front of a Cuban hotel to me wrestling with Pace when he’s a toddler to a brief clip about genealogy to a random clip from a small town mud derby.  A few make sense in terms of people looking for specific information (what is FIMS like?  What’s this specific Cuban hotel like?  What is the purpose of doing genealogy?) while the other two (wrestling, mud derby) show that there are a lot of rednecks on YouTube! 😉

The Long Tail (36 videos, 100 – 1000 views)
The common element to this group of videos is that they’ve been viewed enough that I can be relatively certain they’ve reached an audience beyond my immediate family or the number of people who might click through to watch a video I post on Facebook or Twitter.  This group contains everything from most of my Ryan Meili videos to a few milestone montages (Fathers and Sons, Christmas Baby Reveal, First Day of Kindergarten, First Snow of the Year) that could have broader appeal to people interested in those topics.

Personal Videos (58 videos, 1-100 views)
This final group is mostly comprised of videos of personal moments that probably don’t have a lot of wide appeal beyond my own family and friends.  This is things like a clip of Pace learning to dive at the pool, a montage of daily photos of Sasha or even some videos Pace has made that I’ve uploaded on his behalf.  There are some that I thought might get more views than they’ve gotten (at least so far) but that didn’t “catch” for whatever reason.  My least viewed video (not counting a Lego video I uploaded for Pace just a couple hours ago) has just eight views…and that’s probably a good thing! 😉

A Few Ideas for #Riders Merchandise I Want To See Now That They’ve Won The #GreyCup #cfl #yqr

The Riders are already the third most successful team in terms of selling merchandise in Canada, behind only the Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Laffs.  That’s partly because there isn’t much you can’t buy without the Riders logo on it.

The Riders’ unprecedented success can also be attributed to a significant expansion in products, thanks to having dozens of licensees. Fans can buy Rider-themed light-switch covers, ceramic chip and dip bowls, motor oil, fish hooks — even a Rider poker set.

With the recent Grey Cup victory, I expect they might even beat out both of those franchises, at least for one year! 😉

Here are some ideas to help them along…

  • Commemorative DVD of the Grey Cup Game
  • Complete DVD Set featuring all the pre-game coverage, Player Awards, bonus features such as news coverage during the week, etc.
  • Commemorative CD featuring all the various songs that have been written for the Riders and/or that are closely connected to the Riders.  Maybe it could be a 2CD set – one with the more commercial songs like “What I Wouldn’t Do” by Serena Ryder and “Paint The Whole World Green” by Jason Plumb and another with things like “Green is the Colour” and “Rider Pride”.
  • Branded merchandise (t-shirts, etc.) that connects the Riders’ victory with it also being the final Grey Cup to be played at Taylor Field (I’m sure there’s a witty slogan that smarter people than I could come up with.)
  • Branded merchandise that shows the Grey Cup, the final score with each team’s logo and, at the bottom or on the back, the hash tag #dariansfault
  • Great Western was making CFL-branded beer with cans that looked like footballs.  Would be smart to turn those into Rider Grey Cup footballs if licensing allowed.
  • I’m not sure how you’d turn this brief video clip into a piece of merchandise  (screen saver?  Iphone app?) but I’d buy it! 😉

Music Monday – “Your love is like an ocean/That always takes me home/Whispering wind is blowing/Telling me I’m not alone” #gc101 #greycup #yqr #riders

Well, in the end, the Riders held on to win the Grey Cup yesterday in a game (and really an entire season) that felt pre-destined.  The Grey Cup losses in 2009 & 2010, the Grey Cup being held in Regina for only the third time in its history (and last time at historic Taylor Field), the record-setting 8-1 start – all of it made yesterday’s result feel inevitable (almost).

Back at the start of the season, I posted the commercial for this year’s Riders marketing campaign at RiderFans.com after a co-worker (whose partner’s company made the commercial) posted it on her Facebook page.  I’ve watched that video over and over throughout the year and pretty much had the song on repeat everywhere I went for the last week.

So what a perfect way to end the season but with the way I began it?

Loving this video which always puts a joyful tear in my eye…

Grey Cup – Will We Win or Lose? One Quarter To Go! #gc101 #riders #greycup #yqr

I couldn’t decide whether to write a blog post before or after the game.

So I’m splitting the difference somewhat and writing this near the start of the fourth quarter with the Riders leading 31-16.

The Riders dominated the first half but as we saw in 2009, you have to play 60 minutes or else (I can’t find it now but there’s a famous photo that shows 0:00 on the clock, the Riders ahead having never been behind in the entire game, and the Riders still ended up losing due to the thirteen man penalty with no time left on the clock.)

I don’t know how this game will end.  I’m ecstatic if we win but I can accept if we lose as I know there are more important things in life than sports.

But one final time this year – Go Riders Go!  Or as I saw on Facebook, “Put your Grey Cup in my Regina!” 😉

Rider Family Grey Cup 2013

Just a few shots of our family enjoying the Riders over the past few years…

Friday Fun Link – The #GreyCup is Fun! #yqr #gc101 #riderville #cfl #riders

Lots of  fun stuff happening during Grey Cup week in Regina as you might imagine.

Here’s a few things I’ve come across…

This weekend at the PureSpec convention there was lots of cosplay (that’s costume play) where people dressed up as steampunk characters. I suddenly realized that the Grey Cup will be total cosplay. 44000 people dressing up in green/as their favourite players. Some even dress up as clowns. In that light the Grey Cup game will be the biggest cosplay event ever in Saskatchewan.

  • Or this video by the denizens of a popular local pub (which pretty much sums up what I think most of Regina is sounding like this week – loud, drunk guys screaming at you!)

Flames’ 2004 Stanley Cup Run vs. #Riders 2013 #GreyCup Run

So this week marks the second time in my life that I’ve been living in a city that’s enjoying a run to the championship by a local professional sports team (the Blue Jays’ World Series victories in 1992 & 1993, though memorable, didn’t quite feel the same.)

In 2004, Shea and I were in Calgary when the Flames made their improbable run to the Stanley Cup finals where they lost in Game 7 to the Tampa Bay Lightning.  Now, nearly a decade later, we’re back in Regina for what feels more like a pre-destined trip to the Grey Cup for the Roughriders.

What’s Similar About Both Experiences?

  • Both featured the best loved local sports team overcoming the odds to make it to championship of their respective sports
  • Both have created a non-stop local party that’s seen the whole community rally behind their teams, whether they’re normally fans or not.
  • Both have activities centered around a local “Mile” – the Red Mile for Calgary and the Green Mile (which I believe was inspired by Calgary’s Red Mile) for Regina
  • I only got to one game in the Flames 2004 run and none of the finals as tickets were extremely hard to come by and/or being scalped for big bucks.  I won’t be at the Grey Cup Game either – partly for the same reasons and partly because I want to celebrate the big game with my family.

What’s Different About Both Experiences?

  • The Flames’ run was a two month build that started very slowly but grew as they won each of the three playoff series to get to the Finals and played 26 games in total over the four series.  The Riders’ playoff experience will encompass a grand total of three games over the course of three weeks.
  • I’m at a very different place in my life now.  Back then, young(er) and childless, Shea and I regularly went out to the Red Mile after games (we lived only a few blocks from the Red Mile which helped) and thought nothing of camping out at noon to reserve a spot in a bar for an evening game during the Stanley Cup finals.  Now, we have two kids, aged 6 and 6 months, so we’re a lot more tied down in terms of taking in the festivities.  Add to that the fact that I’m fighting a cold, Shea’s got a sore back and going out partying all night is the last thing on our minds (okay, I’m still thinking about it.  It’s just not likely to happen.)
  • Related to that, back then I worked in a Monday-Friday 9-5 job that had a great deal of flexibility in terms of my working hours which allowed me to, for example, slip out during the day to take in the celebration that was held for the Flames in Calgary’s Olympic Plaza after the Finals ended.  Now, I’ve recently moved to a branch head position which requires a bit of evening and weekend work.  I didn’t draw the short straw to have to work on Sunday at least but this week, I’m working Wednesday to Saturday and also worked tonight – all of which reduces my chances to take in some of the festivities as well.
  • The Flames run was in the late spring so weather was mostly cooperative.  The Riders’ Grey Cup week is happening during a brutal cold snap.
  • Technology like Facebook, Twitter, and so on makes it easy to feel like I’m a part of the Grey Cup celebrations even when I’m not there in person unlike 2003 when these services were either in their infancy or didn’t exist at all.
  • The Flames were huge underdogs with arguably only one superstar (Iginla) or maybe two (Kipprusoff).  The Riders have a number of outstanding players starting with Darian Durant, Kory Sheets, Weston Dressler and on through the team.
  • While everyone pretty much gets a Rider tattoo when they’re born in Saskatchewan (and I should do a whole different post about the downside of the conformity of Rider Nation), your hockey loyalties tend to be much more fluid since we have no team in the province.  Older fans tend to cheer for the Leafs or Habs, a lot of people in my generation cheer for the Oilers and a younger generation is all over the map – Penguins to Sharks to Lightning.  I was a big Islanders fan growing up since they were winning all the Cups when I started seriously following hockey in the early 1980’s.  As the team sucked and sucked more, I switched my main loyalty to the Flames – both because I’ve always had family connections there, because like the Islanders, they were big rivals with the Oilers, and obviously because we ended up living in Cowtown which moved them from “second favourite team” to “yeah, Flames are my favourites.”  My point is that I’ve been a lifelong Riders fan through all the joy and heartbreak whereas I’m a bit of a latecomer to Flames fandom.

Of course, the biggest unknown is whether the end result of the Riders’ 2013 season will be the same or different as the Flames in 2004?  Will the local team come within a hair of winning the championship only to fall short like the Flames did?  Or will the Riders pull it out in the end to cap an amazing storybook season that would see the CFL’s most popular team win the championship in their legendary home stadium one time before its demolished to make way for a new one?

We’ll find out in a few short days.

In the meantime, I’m going to make some time to sit in the family friendly Riderville I’ve created in my basement, pour Pace and I a root beer, and re-watch the Riders’ Western Final game with (coincidentally) Calgary to get myself even more pumped for Sunday! 😉

Some Useful #GreyCup Resources #yqr #riders #riderville #gc101

Welcome to Regina for anyone from outside the province who happens upon this post.  Here’s some useful info about the week to come…

I’ll add any other useful sites as I come across them.  Also, feel free to post a comment with other suggested resources and I’ll add it as well.
