Without a doubt, this has been one of the longest weeks of my life.
Time for stay-cation!
As a former Calgarian who often worked closely with the city’s librarians via my role at the Writers Guild of Alberta (a highlight of my time in Calgary was being invited by one librarian to be her “community guest” at the opening of a new suburban branch that features a speech by well-known author and library advocate, Lois Hole) as well as someone who still has many family and friends still in Calgary (some of whom were very involved in the building of a new central library), it’s been pretty amazing to watch the development of this project over the years.
Some have observed that Calgary has now replaced Halifax as “best library in Canada” which is a testament to the “can-do” entrepreneurial spirit of Calgary and the strong leadership from many people in politics, philanthropy and within the library itself to make this happen.
I can’t wait to visit!
This is still one of my favourite Halloween memories of all time.
When Pace was around five years old, he was really into Bat-man. He had his costume all picked out so the night before Halloween, I figured out a great way to surprise him.
I did a quick late night trip to the nearest pop-up costume shop and bought a Robin suit which I wore to work the next day. Then, when my bus was getting close to home at the end of the day, I called ahead to have Shea get Pace into his costume to come out and meet me.
This video is the result…
I’ve got a new musical obsession after really getting into Kentucky’s own Tyler Childers this past weekend…
He’s got a lot of amazing songs but the one I’m featuring for “Music Monday” today, while still unreleased, caught my ear when I found it on YouTube. See if you can guess why?
(He’s also got a live performance of the same song – at the 55 minute mark of this video – where he explains he wrote the song while high and killing time at a public library before going on stage!)
“Country Squire” – Tyler Childers
The greatest hockey video game of all-time is 25 years old with a still active fan base.
Here’s the 2017/2018 Stanley Cup final as seen through the lens of NHL ’94:
Reddit has a sub-Reddit called /r/ExplainLikeImFive where the goal is to convey complex ideas in a way that even a child (or a typical Redditor?) can understand.
Someone compiled some of the best explanations the site has provided in a single post.
