Music Monday – “I’m a professional cynic/But my heart’s not in it/I’m paying the price of living life at the limit/Caught in the century’s anxiety”

“Country House” – Blur

Music Monday – “It’s just spend a buck to make a buck/You don’t really give a flying fuck/About the people in misery”

“Call It Democracy” – Bruce Cockburn

Music Monday – “All the flowers that you planted mama/In the back yard/All died when you went away”

This song has always been incredibly powerful from when it became a worldwide smash in 1990 but it might even be more powerful to hear it now, nearly thirty years later, after Sinead O’Connor has led a life full of controversy and pain.   “Nothing Compares 2 U” – Sinead O’Connor

Music Monday – “I guess it could be worse, it ain’t that bad/At least I ain’t sittin’ in old Baghdad/In the middle of the hot damn desert sittin’ in a tank”

“You Can Have The Crown” – Sturgill Simpson

Music Monday – “Now in the pouring snow, sad, but swift/I headed down the highway/Hoping that the burden of my blues would lift/And praying that the whiskey would keep me brave”

Easily my favourite song of the year (I can’t believe I haven’t posted it before!) “Letter to Madeline” – Ian Noe

Music Monday – “She said, “Andy, you’re better than your past”/Winked at me and drained her glass/Cross-legged on a barstool, like nobody sits anymore”

“Elephant” – Jason Isbell (This reaction video where a couple commentators slowly realize what the song’s about is a pretty good supplement to what some feel is the best song of 2013.)

Music Monday – “This tiny space is all I need to live in/A simple life’s good for the soul/And I think I’m going to live in a boler/Tow it behind me wherever I go”

I used this song as part of a longer end-of-season montage after our first summer seasonal site three years ago but it deserves a post of its own. (Make sure you read the story about the singer from the Ovarian Cancer “Walk of Hope” page below – very tragic story for such a joyful song.) “Living […]

Music Monday – “A civil war vet went to see/If he could get a bit of timber for a new barn/The number 4 sped/From the train overhead came the itty bitty newborn”

“Sarah Jane and the Iron Mountain Maiden” – Steve Martin and Edie Brickell

Music Monday – “Now Campbeltown Loch is a beautiful place/But the price of the whiskey is grim/How nice it would be if the whiskey was free/And the Loch was filled up to the brim”

One of the best things about traveling is the people you meet. I met a young guy from Scotland at the Banff Hot Spring and during our conversation, mentioned my grandmother was born in Campbeltown, Scotland. He asked if I knew this old folk song and I admitted that I didn’t (though I quickly filed […]

Music Monday – “So girl, leave your boots by the bed/We ain’t leaving this room/Till someone needs medical help/Or the magnolias bloom”

“Cover Me Up” – Jason Isbell
