Friday Fun Link – Copyrighted Books For Free, Legally! (Offer Only Good in Norway)

On top of the recent news that by being excellent stewards of their country’s oil wealth, each Norway citizen was now a “millionaire”* (as opposed to some oil-rich jurisdictions that weren’t quite so successful in this regard), comes this story about the National Library of Norway finding a way to make copyrighted works available to citizens while also still ensuring authors and publishers get paid.

So cool.

* “Millionaire” in terms of what each citizen’s share of the country’s Sovereign Wealth Fund is worth in Norwegian kroner, the equivalent of each citizen having about $160,000 USD worth of value in the collective pot

Some info about other Sovereign Wealth Funds:

After Norway, the country with the second-largest sovereign wealth fund is Saudi Arabia with over $675 billion, followed by the Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates with $627 billion, according to the Sovereign Wealth Fund Institute. Alaska has one of the highest sovereign wealth funds of the U.S. states with about $47 billion.

“Say Something” – Alex & Sierra

I probably should’ve saved this for a Music Monday post but anyhow, I think I’ve admitted to watching TV singing contests (mostly “American Idol” and “X Factor”, not “The Voice” or the various other ones that are out there) and as an admitted huge fan of The Submarines, I like that the winners of X Factor’s latest season, Alex and Sierra, were in the same mold.

I know it’s all a put-on to a certain degree but I think Simon Cowell called this the best performance he’d seen, not just in this season or on X Factor but possibly in all the singing shows he’d been involved with.  Pretty high praise, legit or not…

“Got Land? Thank An Indian”

Glad to hear the Balcarres school backed off their initial ruling that a student’s “Got Land? Thank An Indian” hoodie was racist and/or offensive to let her continue to wear it.  But I still think they made the wrong call in the first place to censor the student’s wardrobe choice.

(As for the CBC commenter’s question, “Could my kid wear a shirt that says “Got infrastructure? Thank a settler” I’d be more than fine with that too.  Not everyone agrees but to me, free speech within legal limits is the ultimate goal and it goes both ways.)

At times like this, everyone should take a chill pill and keep in mind the noted philosopher Stephen Fry’s observation regarding offense which I’ve posted on this blog before (and I’m sure will again)…

Music Monday – “He said, ‘Dad, how are you unable/To love me/For who I am?'”

Devin Cuddy is the son of Blue Rodeo’s Jim Cuddy. Equally rootsy and catchy as his dad but young Cuddy’s music explores topics I don’t think his dad’s ever did…

Saturday Snap – Pac-Fish

Pace was playing Pac-Man on the iPad but wasn’t doing too well. He handed it to me, saying “You do it dad. I’m no good at these old-school games!”

Later he made this Lego creation, explaining “It’s a Pac-Fish. That’s just like Pac-Man but a fish” which I thought was quite creative…

Friday Fun Link – Words For That

Friday’s aren’t too fun when you’ve got four family members in various states of illness (and having two kids sick is a lot different experience than just one!) so here’s a quick link before hitting the hay (and hoping everybody can sleep through the night tonight!)

Words For That
