Music Monday – “You can’t tell me nothing/And I’ve had a lot of drama/’Nuff drama/You can’t tell me nothing/Just look in my eyes, it’s all too clear/But it don’t matter, cause I’m still here”
First heard Dizzee Rascal when I would listen to a Britpop mix on AccuRadio while working at RPL’s Central library many years ago. Hadn’t thought of him/UK Grime music for years but recently rediscovered the album after going through some YouTube rabbit holes on the weekend… “U Can’t Tell Me Nuffin” – Dizzee Rascal
Music Monday – “But I know I’m on a losing streak/As I pass down by your street/And if you wanna show, then just let me know/And I’ll sing in your ear again”
“The Drugs Don’t Work” – The Verve
Music Monday – “Everybody had a hard year/Everybody had a good time/Everybody had a wet dream/Everybody saw the sunshine”
“I’ve Got A Feeling” – Paul McCartney & John Lennon
Music Monday – “God save the queen/’Cause tourists are money/And our figurehead/Is not what she seems” (aka Decorum and The Queen’s Death)
There are lots of interesting angles to the Queen’s death – cultural, historical, sociological, religious, etc. etc. – but one that fascinates me is this notion of “decorum”… https://www.twitter.com/MsPackyetti/status/1567987415704379393 There’s a parallel to gun violence in the States where politicians will quickly say “It’s not the time” to talk about gun violence…right after a mass […]
Friday Fun Link – 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony
With so much focus on the UK and the meaning of the Queen’s death, I’m reminded of the amazing opening ceremony from the 2012 Olympics in London which captured so many unique aspects of British life and culture (while also being a real thumb to the nose to the 2008 Beijing Olympics Opening Ceremony!)
Music Monday – “And yes, I let you use me from the day that we first met/But I’m not done yet/Falling for you, fool’s gold”
“Elizabeth My Dear & Fool’s Gold” – The Stone Roses
Music Monday – “This machine will, will not communicate/These thoughts and the strain I am under/Be a world child, form a circle/Before we all go under/And fade out again and fade out again”
“Street Spirit (Fade Out)” – Radiohead
Music Monday – “Wake up, it’s a beautiful morning/The sun shining for your eyes/Wake up, it’s so beautiful/For what could be the very last time”
Obviously an impossible question but whenever there’s a “What’s your favourite song of all-time” question, I always pick “Find The River” by R.E.M. I love how melancholy and poetic and longing that song is. There’s another song that’s in my Top 10 and which is probably a contender for number one – “Wake Up Boo!” […]
