Music Monday – “I’m sure you’ve heard it all before/But you never really had a doubt/I don’t believe that anybody/Feels the way I do about you now”

Hard to believe Oasis’ “(What’s The Story) Morning Glory” album is 25 years old being released in the fall of 1995.

Oasis was basically a one-hit wonder in North America for most people but I was fortunate to be in England in fall 1995 on a University exchange which was during the height of the “Cool Britannia” movement.

Oasis, Blur, Radiohead, Pulp and a bunch of other bands were a huge part of what suddenly made England cool again and though they all staked claims to being the “best” band because one was more innovative and another got more critical acclaim and another challenged Oasis directly, Oasis would go on to blow them all away in terms of sheer popularity.

And that one-hit wonder – “Wonderwall” – has become almost a cliche, a modern “Stairway To Heaven” or “Freebird”.  But when it was first released, it’s hard to believe how powerful and influential it was – blasting from dorm rooms, powering pub singalongs, omnipresent on radio and television.

I admit I even find it overplayed now and don’t seek it out the same way I did twenty or twenty-five years ago.  But sometimes I hear it and it transports me back to one of the most magical times of my life…
