It’s amazing how the hospital can be both the location for some of the happiest moments of people’s lives (births of children, news about diseases being beaten and bones being healed) and some of the worst (a loved one doesn’t make it after an accident, grandma’s last breaths on the palliative care ward, the diagnosis you never want to hear.)
While many of us are quarantining at home and learning how to telework, nurses around the world like Shea are reporting to work, going into a highly stressful, ever-changing situations to fight against an invisible enemy, knowing they might be interacting with those same patients who a month ago were loudly criticizing healthcare workers as “lazy” and “overpaid” but who are now unemployed, sick and waiting for their own government support cheque while sitting at home.
There are many heroes leading the charge in this unprecedented world we know live in but I’d put nurses, doctors and others in healthcare right at the top.
