Top Tech Trends for 2012

I love this time of year for all the “Best of the Year”-type lists that come out.  And one of my absolute favourites of these type of lists are the “Top Tech Trends for the Coming Year” ones.

For 2012, a writer for Mashable.com is predicting the following as the big trends:

  • Touch Computing
  • Social Gestures
  • NFC and Mobile Payments
  • Beyond the iPad
  • TV Everywhere
  • Voice Control
  • Spatial Gestures
  • Second-screen experiences
  • Flexible screens
  • HTML5

Pretty exciting.  I’ve said it before but I love living in the future!  (In fact, going further into the future, IBM is predicting mind-reading computers within five years – although they may be cheating a bit since that technology is already in its infancy!)

Pete Cashmore, the guy who wrote these predictions knows what he is talking about! TV everywhere has been a hot topic for a while now and it seems that just this year TV providers have taken notice of this hottest trend. I have been using the DISH Remote Access app for over a year and a half, so you can imagine my surprise that other TV providers have not taken a hold of TV everywhere like DISH. I can watch LIVE TV and my DVR recordings on my mobile devices everywhere there is Wi-Fi or mobile 3G network. I work for DISH so I am psyched that DISH was well ahead of this trend and I am excited to see what other trends they lead in 2012.

As I’m sure you know, convergence is a huge deal in the digital world. The most obvious example is the iPhone which combines phone/music/browser and, via apps, so much more in a single package. The same is true of television so I’m surprised if DISH network is the only company looking to provide mobile and alternate access to customer’s content. Good on you!
