Is That Bottled Water I See On The Stage?

So I'll have an optimistic moment like yesterday's post and think that “hey, maybe the planet isn't doomed.”  Then I wake up today and, while watching the Live Earth concerts, hear Madonna say “if you want to save the planet, let me see you jump!”

And I'll feel sad because I know that the planet is doomed.

We noticed the bottled water too! I still don't know how this concert is going to save the planet, and I keep waiting for someone to hop up on stage and explain it to me. They keep playing DiCaprio’s speech when he said “gentlemen” wrong. I’m dwelling more on/laughing at that rather than appreciating the message that the concert is allegedly sending.

There's always hypocrisy in the environmental movement – my job dropped when I watched “An Inconvenient Truth” and heard Al Gore proudly proclaim that he's given his presentation in hundreds of locations around the world. Al, jet fuel exhaust isn't exactly good for the ozone layer!
Plus this whole idea of carbon sinks is pretty stupid if you ask me. It's like “I'm too lazy to clean my own house so I'll pay a poor person to be my maid.”
    only the logic is…
“I'm not disciplined enough to make the small changes to improve the environment so while living in a 3000 sq foot mansion and jetting all over the world for my work/pleasure, I'll buy off this impact from some Swedish person who lives in a tree fort.”
I'm not an environmental evangelical – I drink bottled water on occasion myself, drive probably more than I should, still have a hard time remembering to turn off the tap when brushing my teeth or whatever. But it just seems like some of the hypocrisy of the people involved in a concert like this is on such a different level – “do as I say, not as I do” could be the motto of Live Earth.

I don’t know if I buy Madonna telling me I need to be a better human being. She is on stage at live earth with a children’s choir, and a million some kilovolts of lights and TV screens telling me I need to turn off a light bulb to save the planet. I’m supposed to be sitting at home fearing that I have brought on the apocalypse because I forgot to turn off my bathroom light. I am supposed to be ashamed of my supposed feelings of privilege, and entitlement, because an evil coal-burning monster powers my house. While Madonna wears clothes that she paid ten times to much for (at least) and were probably made in a sweatshop in a third world country powered by toddlers. Did that school choir ride their bikes to the concert? Did Madonna hitch a ride there in a hybrid vehicle? Did someone say they saw her drinking bottled water? Was the TV screens and lights powered by Al Gores hot air and a windmill?
Al made it out to be a sign off the apocalypse. I don’t remember that part of revelations. “ The most powerful nation on the planet will be run by a moron, and the moron he narrowly beat will arise as the messiah. And when he puts the minstrels on high to sing for the all the peoples of all the lands it will be a sign that there is but a score of years left until the seven headed beast awakens.” Just checked my Gideon’s bible cant find that passage. Did Al use a hybrid bus when he was campaigning; are all his global warming movies put out in biodegradable cassettes, and earth friendly film?
Did I see Metalica tell me I need to save energy, we aren’t talking Lars, you tried to sue me remember. You actually put my user name in a law suite to try to get me to buy CD’s, your CD’S. You wanted more money and you wanted to get it by forcing me to buy your CD’S. CD’S are the round things that are made of plastic and a thin sheet of metal foil, and come in a plastic case, with paper slides and little booklets that have pictures on them in ink. Hetfield, shaving doesn’t leave a carbon footprint, its ok guy trim that shit up.
Global warming is real? There is an impending apocalypse? Come on the planet is a huge life form, with all these little parasites on it. There is a balance; everything that we do and make, and usurp comes from the earth. We haven’t rearranged molecules to invent some new toxic form of matter. There has been drastic climate change in the past before we polluted, there has been gradual warming and cooling all over the planet as weather patterns change and evolve, carbon is a base for life, we are made from carbon, if I remember it is one of the most common basic elements. It is nothing new that the planet can’t deal with.
Remember when David Suzuki used to teach us things, about plants and animals and nature. We learned to love nature and the planet, and we were educated. David that was what you were meant to do, don’t preach Suzuki, go back and teach.
Is there validity to the message? Yes! It wouldn’t hurt any off us to walk a little more, and turn off our lights. And not buy as much of the unnecessary things we do. It would be great to be more environmentally conscious. It would be beneficial to get large corporations to show a little more earth consciousness. Should I feel guilty because I have my air conditioner running today? Hell no!
Madonna don’t preach! Even if we are in trouble deep!
